As were bringing this series to a close I wanted to bring up one more thing about Sun Myung Moon before we look at witnessing to Unification Church members. According to Moon and other sources, Moon was involved in and endorsed the occult. Sun Myung Moon was involved in clairvoyance, necromancy, séances and trances among other occult practices. Divine Principle (pgs. 16, 58, 60, 77, 88, 163, 181-182, 529).
Moon practiced the occult
In Divine Principle page 529 Sun Myung Moon said “Therefore, countless men of religion are receiving very clear revelations concerning the Lord’s Second Coming in Korea in many different ways, by contacting many spirit men of various levels : from the realm of miscellaneous spirits to the realm of the paradise level spirits. Nevertheless, the leaders of the present Christian world, due to their spiritual ignorance, are still unresponsive, and have refused to pay heed to such things. This is similar to what happened in Jesus’ day, when the chief priests and rabbis, who should have been the first to know of the coming of the Messiah, were entirely unaware of the fact due to their spiritual ignorance, while, on the other hand, the astrologers and shepherds knew of the message through revelations.”
Contacting men and women who are dead is a practice called necromancy and the Lord explicitly forbids it in the Bible. He also seems to be endorsing the use of astrology. Astrology and the use of the zodiac to predict future events is also expressly forbidden in the Bible. See Deuteronomy 18:9-14 below.
“Any Christian who, in spiritual communication, can see John the Baptist directly in the spirit world will be able to understand the authenticity of all these things.” Divine Principle p.163
Occultist Arthur Ford talks about his friend Sun Myung Moon practicing occultic arts with him
Moon is involved in spiritism (MS. 2/20/1973 p.7 DP p.529ff). Famed occultic spiritist Arthur Ford mentions Moon as a friend who has practiced the occultic arts with him. (Ford’s book, Unknown But Known. Signet Mystic, 1968.)
The Bible clearly denounces such actions.
Deuteronomy 18:9-14 When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations. (10) There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, (11) Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. (12) For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. (13) Thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God. (14) For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the LORD thy God hath not suffered thee so to do.
Witnessing to Unification Church members
As we bring this series to a close I promised that we would talk about how to reach our moonie friends. The point in all of this is to try to bring them to the truth. Let’s look at some ways we can witness to the Unification Church.
The ultimate cause of anyone trusting in Christ is the Holy Spirit. Let’s hit our knees and ask our father to work in their lives to save them. Let’s also ask for the Holy Spirit to guide us in what to say. We need to trust in God during the entire encounter. You may even want to fast. Remember, we are battling for someone’s soul.
1Pe 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Do not enter into this witnessing encounter thinking we have it all figured out. Let’s be humble. Let’s speak with grace and meekness. Do not drive them away with your words or attitude.
Ask good questions
One question you can ask your Unification friend, is if they are aware that moon said Divine Principle does not contradict the Bible.
Then ask if they‘re aware that Divine Principle does contradict the Bible.
We can then (in meekness and humility) show them some ways that Divine Principle contradicts the Bible as we have discussed throughout this series.
Join Youth Apologetics Training tomorrow as we conclude this series and talk more about how we can witness to our Unification Church friends.
