The Adam God Doctrine
As we kick off the audio series about the official Mormon doctrine of God the Father, I would like to take a side road and look at doctrine that has been denounced by the Latter Day Saints. It is often referred to as the Adam God Doctrine.
What is the Adam God Doctrine?
Like the doctrines name, it is the belief that Adam is both the Archangel Michael, as well as the Ancient of Days. In other words, it was believed at one time that Adam was God the Father. It was the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Brigham Young who first taught this doctrine. Not too long after Brigham Young’s presidency, the Latter Day Saints denounced this doctrine as unbiblical.
Brigham Young claimed to be a prophet who spoke the words of God
It should be pointed out that Brigham Young claimed that all his sermons were straight from God.
“I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture.” – Brigham Young (President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Journal of Discourses, vol.13, p.95, January 2, 1870
What did Brigham Young actually teach concerning the Adam God Doctrine?
“How much unbelief exists in the minds of the Latter-day Saints in regard to one particular doctrine which I revealed to them, and which God revealed to me—namely that Adam is our Father and God.” – Brigham Young (President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Deseret News, June 18, 1873
“When our father Adam came into the garden of Eden, he came into it with a celestial body, and brought Eve,*one of his wives, with him. He helped to make and organize this world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days! about whom holy men have written and spoken—He is our Father and our God, and the only God with whom we have to do.” – Brigham Young (President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Journal of Discourses vol.1, p.50
The LDS eventually rejected the Adam God Doctrine
“Yes, President Young did teach that Adam was the father of our spirits, and all the related things that the cultists ascribe to him. This, however, is not true. He expressed views that are out of harmony with the gospel.” – Bruce R. McConkie (Quorum of the Twelve Apostles), letter to Eugene England, p. 6, 19 February 1981
In the Coming days we will discuss what the LDS actually believe concerning the Father.
Brigham Young made the Adam God Doctrine a salvation issue!
“Jesus, our elder brother, was begotten in the flesh by the same character that was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven. Now, let all who may hear these doctrines, pause before they make light of them, or treat them with indifference, for they will prove their salvation or damnation.” – Brigham Young (President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), Journal of Discourses vol.1, p.51 [In reference to Adam God, talk given on 9th April 1852]
In other words, those who reject the Adam God Doctrine will be damned! The LDS church now faces a big problem.
A Major Problem for the LDS
Either the LDS must reject Brigham Young as a prophet or they must accept that from the end of Brigham Young’s presidency to the present, they have been following and believing falsely. This is a major problem. Brigham Young was instrumental in building the foundation of the Mormon faith.
“You talk about teaching false doctrine and being damned. Here is a list of false doctrines that if anyone teaches he will be damned. And there is not one of these that I have ever known to be taught in the Church, but I am giving you the list for a perspective because of what will follow. Teach that God is a Spirit, the sectarian trinity. Teach that salvation comes by grace alone, without works. Teach original guilt, or birth sin, as they express it. Teach infant baptism. Teach predestination. Teach that revelation and gifts and miracles have ceased. Teach the Adam-God theory (that does apply in the Church). Teach that we should practice plural marriage today. Now, any of those are doctrines that damn” (Sermons and Writings of Bruce R. McConkie, p. 337).
A challenge to my Mormon friends
Please think and consider this problem. Brigham young claimed this doctrine came straight from God. This allows us to test his words and determine if he is a false prophet. According to current LDS beliefs, Brigham Young’s Adam God Doctrine is incorrect; therefore Mormons should believe that Brigham Young is a false prophet.
What do you think? Is Brigham Young a false prophet? Has the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints been deceived since Brigham Young stepped down?
